  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy
  • One Major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. For example, the residents were suspicious of Les Goodman and they confronted him. All of the neighbors Thought that Les was the alien because his car turned on randomly and he was caught looking up at the sky, and it looked like he was waiting for something to come. Another example is that after the neighbors turned on Les they turned on Steve for being suspicious. They accused Steve for talking to aliens with a radio he was working on. Even Though that the neighbors were Steve's friend and they knew him, Yet they accused them like he was their enemy. The last example is that Charlie shot Pete Vanhorn. Charlie Shot him because he was scared of the unknown. He shot the dark figure because fear got the worst of him and he took away his friends life. Because Charlie saw the figure as an enemy, he shot it without thinking. Instead he shot his friend. Given these facts, they can really prove that when people are scared and don't know what to do it can show that mankind is really its own worse enemy.
