  • Breaking the Cycle
  • by Grace Moritz
  • Sadie, Jade, and Carly were best friends!
  • They are all in the 5th grade, and need to prepare for a big math test.
  • Sadie's parents don't care if she studies or not. They let her stay up all night and play on her phone when she wants to.They don't seem to care very much when she shows them her good grades.
  • Jade's parents are stricter. They say that she has to study for 2 hours every night or they will ground her.
  • Jade knows that if she does badly on the math test, her parents will be mad at her.
  • Carly's parents just tell Carly to do her best. Her mom helps her study when she gets home from work. She knows that they will be proud of her if she tries hard on the test.
  • Later that week, the math test finally comes.
  • All three girls did well on the test! They all passed, but their parents had different reactions....
  • Ok, Sadie.
  • Only an A-? You could have done better, Jade.
  • Good job Carly! We're so proud of you.
  • The girls grew up and developed different relationships with their parents.
  • Sadie felt like she was loved, but not challenged. She wished that her parents showed her more affection, but also showed her that they believed she could do more.
  • Jade grew very distant from her parents. She never felt like they were proud of her or that they loved her.
  • Carly was very happy about how she was raised. She felt loved and appreciated throughout her whole childhood.
  • Sadie, Jade, and Carly stayed best friends as they grew up.
  • I wish my parents showed me more affection.
  • Sometimes, they discussed their childhoods and what they felt about how they were raised.
  • I wish my parents helped me more growing up.
  • They could CHOOSE how to raise their children! It didn't have to be the same way they grew up.
  • I loved and appreciated when my parents made it clear that they loved me.
  • All three girls found it helpful when their parents told them they were loved. They all wanted their parents to make it clear that they were important.
  • They wanted to become parents themselves, but they were worried that they wouldn't be good at it.But then, they realized something!
  • They could take the GOOD things and use them, and throw out the BAD things!
  • Sadie, Jade, and Carly now knew that the way they had been raised didn't have to affect the way they raised their children. They could work to build better relationships and raise their kids the way they wished they themselves had been raised!
  • So, if you choose to have your own children, you can also choose how you want to raise them. Your parents' parenting styles don't define YOU!
  • The End
