  • Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman to go to space
  • Ellen Ochoa was born on May 10th, 1958 in LA and is an American engineer, former astronaut, as well as a former director of the Johnson Space Center. Having been born in Los Angeles, she mainly grew up in La Mesa with her parents along with her 3 brothers and sister.
  • Her parents divorced at around her teenage years in high school. She and her siblings lived with their mother, who struggled to take care of her 5 children, still made time for her college courses. Seeing how much their hardworking mother did for them, Ellen Ochoa also developed a drive for success.
  • Ellen Ochoa graduated from Grossmont High School in El Cajon, 1975. She continued to study and received her bachelor of science degree in physics at San Diego State University. Graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1980 and earned her master of science degree along with doctorate in Stanford Department of Electrical Engineering.
  • On April 8th, 1993 Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to go to space having been sent on the 9-day STS-56 mission aboard the Discovery Space Shuttle. Her interest in electrical engineering shifted towards being an astranaut due to Sally Ride being the 1st American woman on going to space.
  • Apart from being the 1st Hispanic woman to go to space, she has received many rewards such as NASA's Distinguished Service Medal (1995) and several Space Flight Medals in 2002, 1999, 1994, 1993. Today Ellen Ochoa, now 63, resides in Texas with her husband and 2 children.
