  • Trifles
  • Well, Mr Hale, tell just what happened when you came here yesterday morning.
  • Trifles
  • Mrs. Peters... Do you think she did it?I don't think she did. Asking for an apron and her little shawl. Worrying about her fruit.
  • Mr Peters says it looks bad for her. Mr Henderson is awful sarcastic in a speech and he'll make fun of her saying she didn't wake up.
  • John Wright didn't wake when they was slipping that rope under his neck.
  • Trifles
  • As if living with a boring and cold old man for the last few years wasn't punishment enough.
  • It must have been sad, that your partner did not like the noise in the house... she sang very beautifully in the choir before getting married
  • Well, I don't see any signs of anger around here...Locking her up in town and then coming out here and trying to get her own house to turn against her!
  • Mr Henderson said coming out that what was needed for the case was a motive; something to show anger, or—sudden feeling.
  • When they arrived at the house, the county attorney began an interrogation with Mr. Hale, who found Mr. Wright's body, and later with his wife, since the couple were the neighbors of the deceased and his wife.
  • Trifles
  • It's log cabin pattern. Pretty, isn't it? I wonder if she was going to quilt it or just knot it?
  • She was piecing a quilt.
  • They wonder if she was going to quilt it or just knot it!
  • While the men went to look for evidence on the second floor, the ladies started a conversation. At the same time Mrs. peters was looking for some clothes for Minnie.
  • Trifles
  • Why, I don't know whether she did or not. There's something wrapped up in this piece of silk...Oh, Mrs Peters—it's—
  • Why, here's a bird-cage, Did she have a bird, Mrs Hale?
  • Mrs. Hale asked Mrs. Peters as they gathered up the things she was carrying for Minnie.
  • Trifles
  • Well, Henry, at least we found out that she was not going to quilt it. She was going to—what is it you call it, ladies?
  • The men went downstairs, interrupting the women's conversation, hoping to find something in the barn.
  • We think she was going to—knot it
  • When they went to the barn the ladies found trifles that could mean something more.
  • Somebody—wrung—its—neck.
  • It's the bird.
  • Their eyes met, a feeling of growing comprehension, of horror. They hid the piece of silk under the quilt and the bird in Mrs. Hale's pocket. They heard footsteps at the entrance and acted normal.
  • We call it—knot it, Mr Henderson.
