  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy.
  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. One example of this would be this quote, "Pete Van Horn He was just gonna go over to the next block to see if the power was on-. Woman, you killed him Charlie you shot him dead.". This happens when the aliens have turned all the lights off to freak out the humans. Because of this, everyone begins to blame each other, then a figure is seen in the dark street, and without a second thought Charlie shoots them. it ends up being their neighbor Pete Van Horn. This supports the theme because it shows how the aliens might have messed up the lights, but in the end, they didn't harm anyone and it was Charlie his own neighbor who ended up taking Pete's life. Another example is " Man One: it isn't the kid ... Its Bob Weavers house. Woman One it isn't Bob Weavers house it's Don martians place. Charlie I'm telling you it's the boy". In this quote, the characters are arguing and accusing each other of what's happening which leads them to argue and start fighting each other. This shows how when the aliens shake things up they all start turning on each other and fighting. this shows that in the end, the humans were the ones that destroyed each other. lastly "and we'll go from to the other and let them destroy themselves" It shows that the aliens had planned to destroy Maple Street using humans and their emotions against them. And not only that it shows the author clearly stating the theme Through The Alien characters. The aliens say that they see a pattern in the way that humans react when they get rid of the three lights and they start to destroy each other and themselves. In the end, all these things show that the theme of this story is mankind is its own worst enemy.
