In order for an object to move the Force applied must overcome the objects inertia
1) An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
When the kids kick the ball between each other they overcome that balls mass for it to move. If they don't the ball will stay at rest.
When an object is at rest or constant motion it is balanced
The larger the objects mass the more inertia it has.
2) The acceleration of an object is directly related to the net force and inversely related to its mass.
It will be harder for the kids to move this ball because it has a larger mass. It is harder to start an object in motion than to keep it on motion.
That is how a row boat is able to move. When the kids push against water it will push the boat forward.
When force is applied to an object it is called an action force.
3) Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
A reaction force is a result when an object or a boat in this case into the original object
