  • Hi my name is Yuxin Xue. After reading about Gina’s story, I learn about how judgemental society can be toward the possibility of a child with a disability. What surprises me is it even includes some populations of doctors, nurses, and educators.Leading me to think about the importance of seeing the positives rather than the negatives from an individual’s abilities.
  • As a teacher, one way I would assist parents is to share their voice by discussing realistic goals that the parents feel are essential for their child to achieve. Rather than focus on setting unrealistic goals and telling parents about what the student is not doing in class. Notify the parents when the student makes a progress on achieving the goal.
  • Another way I would assist parents’ voice is by conducting frequent meetings with the parents. The meetings can be conducted through zoom meetings, google classroom, and phone calls. It will allow parents to learn about their children’s performance in school and parents’ thoughts about their child’s performance.
  • After learning about all the challenges Gina’s mom had to go through to provide Gina with the opportunity that she should receive in an educational environment. The third way I would assist parents’ voices is by having a comment section in the google classroom. The instructor can encourage parents to send out any private comments that they felt should be taken attention for. This way the teacher and parent interaction can be quick and effective.
  • The fourth way I would assist parents’ voices is by sending home surveys with questions for the parents to complete at the beginning of the year. The questions will be regarding students’ social skills, strengths, and weaknesses based on parents’ observation. It will allow the instructor to build a broader understanding of students’ abilities. Guiding the instructor to have a better understanding of what tools would assist the student best.
  • The fifth way I would assist parents’ voices is by listening and taking actions for their concerns. It disturbs me when reading about the section Gina’s mom receives no real change for modifications to promote socialization, peer interactions, and communication for Gina. Even after endless meetings with video documentation to support her suggestions. I felt the school staff should listen to the parents’ needs and try to do some modifications to increase social practices for Gina. Instead, Gina’s mom had to look for a new placement that listens to their suggestions.
