- Citra and Rowan are invited to the Grand Civic Opera by a mysterious someone who turns out to be none other than Scythe Faraday himself. Scythe Faraday then suggests that the two teenagers live with to train them and prepare them for the life of a Scythe.
- Citra and Rowan came to admire, understand, and look up to Scythe Faraday although training was tough.
- At the Vernal Conclave Scythe Faraday is questioned when Xenocrates about his amount of apprentices. During this conclave, Citra and Rowan both fail their first apprentice test. When Scythe Goddard's jealousy of Faraday betters him he orders one of his followers, Scythe Rand, to propose that once one of the two apprentices is an ordained that that chosen one kill the unworthy apprentice to ensure competition.
- Scythe Faraday kills himself in order to protect Citra and Rowan, however, Scythe Goddard and Scythe Curie volunteer to take in the apprentices in order to finish their training. As time passes Citra begins to suspect that Scythe Faraday was murdered and Rowan begins to embraced Goddard's morals and his own dark side.
- At Harvest Conclave Citra and Rowan both try to throw their match in order to give the other a fighting chance; however, Rowan takes it a step to far by breaking Citra's neck and risking disqualification. At Harvest Conclave, Rowan also learns Citra's theory.
- Rowan learns that Goddard's been blackmailing Xenocrates with the secret of Xenocrates' illegitimate daughter.
