A police inspector arrives. Inspector Gooleis making inquiries about the suicide of Eva Smith.Mr. Birling recalls that he employed her at his factory and sacked her for demanding higher wages. Shelia realises she had the same girl sacked soon after at her new job as a shop assistant.

Gerald gives Sheila the ring after Mr. Birling gives speeches about war and the Titanic.

Mr. Birling tells Gerald about the knighthood. He alsocontends that people should only feel responsible to their own families and not to the larger community.

(Act 2) Sheila and Gerald
When the inspector mentions the fact that she was also known as Daisy Renton, Gerald admits that she had an affair with her. Sheila refuses to leave the room. Mrs. Birling threatens the inspector. Sheila hands the ring back to Gerald. Mrs. Birling admits to the fact that she refused to help Eva, but Mrs. Birling blames the father of her child.

(Act 3) Eric and Eva's relationship
Eric admits to his relationship with Eva Smith and stealing money from Mr. Birling. The inspector makes a speech about social irresponsibility. The inspector leaves.

Mr. Birling fears a public scandal. Gerald and Mr. Birling deduce that inspector Goole isn't a real inspector. Mr. Birling soon gets a call from the police informing them that an inspector is coming to investigate the suicide of a girl.
