  • Cultural Diversity
  • How do we want to know the cultural differences of a person that exist between and within the nation?
  • There are three types of cultural. First is dominant culture. Dominant culture is a culture of the most powerful group in society (Malay). Next is subcultures. Subculture is a cultures of groups whose values and norms of behavior differ from those of the dominant culture (Chinese/Indians).
  • Additional, subcultures created Countercultures as a reaction against the values of the dominant culture (Communist/Al-Qaeda) and the last is culture shock. Culture shock is a disorientation that people feel when they encounter culture radically different from their own and believe the cannot depend on their own taken-for-granted assumptions about life.
  • Cultural Ethnocentrism
  • Ethnocentrism is the act of judging other cultures based on the preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one’s own culture. In other words, an ethnocentric assesses another culture from the standards of his own culture. He is concerned with the similarities between his culture and others. If the beliefs and customs of another culture are different from his culture, he’ll feel that culture is barbaric or savage.

  • This happens because an ethnocentric person feels that his or her culture is the ‘correct’ or ‘normal’ way of living. For example, a Westerner might find East Asians’ habit of eating with chopsticks a silly practice. Similarly, some people may also show reluctance to eat the food of another culture.
  • Cultural Relativism
  • Cultural relativism is the notion that cultural norms and values derive their meaning within a specific social context. According to this postulate, values, beliefs, practices and behaviors of people should be understood within their own cultural context, and they should not be judged against the criteria of another culture. This is based on the concept that no culture is better or superior to another.

Fads is temporary but widely copies activity followed enthusiastically by large number of people while Fashion is currently valued style of behavior, thinking or appearance that is longer lasting and more widespread than a fad.
  • High culture is consisting of classical music, opera, ballet, live theater and other activities usually patronized by elite audiences. In contrast, popular culture is consisting of activities, products and services that are assumed to appeal primarily to members of the middle and working class.
  • Yup, that's right. Sure!
  • And can you explain about it?
  • Cultural Imperialism
  • Cultural imperialism is the process and practice of promoting one culture over another. Often this occurs during colonization, where one nation overpowers another country, typically one that is economically disadvantaged and/or militarily weaker.
  • The dominant country then forces its cultural beliefs and practices onto the conquered nation. This has happened since nations have been warring, beginning with the Greek and Roman empires to the French and British empires, the American Revolution and the rise of communist governments in China and the Soviet Union to present day changes in governments around the world.
  • What is Cultural Relativism?
  • Is it true that global popular culture has 2 types, namely high culture and popular culture?
