  • ok! today Im gonna tell a little story about periodic trends
  • Whats that?!
  • dude your radius is getting kinda big-you should go for a run
  • you see, as the atom runs across the table his atomic radius is going to get smaller
  • On Monday morning in Ms. W's class, the students will begin understanding atomic radius and periodic trends
  • but Ms.W i understand that the elements have smaller atomic radiuses as they go from left to right....
  • im so glad you asked! As you go up the periodic table the radius decreases
  • atomic radius decreases as you go from left to right
  • dude you radius is getting kinda big you should go for a run
  • As the atom goes for a run it slowly shrinking! This shows the atomic radius changing across a period!
  • if you notice in the example of the changing atoms as you move across a period, the number of shells on an atom may not change but the number of valance electrons will change. If there are more valance electrons then the nucleus will pull them in tighter because there is less shielding! Therefore the atomic radius will decrease but, the hold on the electrons will be stronger.
  • Atomic radius! Why does the periodic table work like this?
  • her students questioned atomic radius's trends not only going across a period...
  • but what about up and down!?
  • The atomic radius increases as you go down the table. Just like the atom on a run up a group!
  • Knowing the Periodic trends allows us, scientists, to be able to predict any elements qualities and compare based on their placement on the table!
  • This shows that Ionization energy(the energy it takes to take off a valance electron) is inversely proportional to atomic radius, Because the nucleus is holding on tighter to the electrons.
