- The Tawny owls of 50 years ago looked different than they do today. The majority of the population was the grey and snowy white coloured owls.
- Pollution and climate change
- The grey Tawny Owls were noticeably bigger and had larger numbers in the population. This was due to their ability to blend into their surroundings allowing them to be more successful hunters and provided camouflage from predators.
- The brown Tawny Owls were at a disadvantage when hunting and had to face predators who could easily spot them in the white landscape. As a result, their numbers suffered, many struggled with a lack of food so population numbers were affected by starvation, lack of size and ability to reproduce and loss of population due to predators.
- Unfortunately, human interference begins to change the environment. The increase in greenhouse gases and other pollutants is causing the polar ice caps to melt and changing the landscape in many nordic countries like Finland.
