- The Portuguese were one of the first countries who tried to colonize India. One of their methods were to establish different outposts along the coasts of India in order to control spice trade.
- After the Portuguese, the Dutch started trading in India. In 1602, they established the Dutch East India Company. They were able to trade with different lands from the Cape of Good Hope to the Strait of Magellan. They were also actually able to establish outpost in India.
- On May 10, 1857, the sepoy started a battle in Meerut, a city in India. This battle extended to other parts of India. This battle was called the "Sepoy Mutiny".
- In 1858, the Government of India Act was ratified because of the Sepoy Mutiny. This meant that Great Britain had control over India directly, naming this period the "British Raj".
- France also had several outposts in India. In June 1756, the imprisonment of 150 British people occurred. This was called the Black Hole of Calcutta.
- After several failed expeditions, Queen Elizabeth I announced the establishment of the English East India Company. Like the Dutch East India Company, it was given trade monopoly from the Cape of Good Hope to the Strait of Magellan.
