One Major Theme Of The Monsters Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion is destructive
the car turned on by itself
how could it do that
One example from page 75-77, that supports the theme is when the residents start to be suspicious of Les Goodman because his car was the only one that turned on by itself while there was no power in the town. From the residents being suspicious of Les Goodman this shows that any little detail can be suspicious and could ruin the trust between the neighborhood. Another example from page 77-78 is when Charlie tells the residents on what radio set Steve has been workin on then Mrs brand confesses that she had bought Steve a Ham Radio set, while the residents think that Steve has been talking to monster/aliens. Mrs brand tells the residents to come take a look in a frightened voice trying to get the residents convince that Steve is not a monster, but Steve will not allow them without a search warrant. This scene shows that the neighbors are starting turn on each other and not trust/believe what their friends have to say. A Third example from page 82-83, is when Charlie thought the dark shadow was the monster and grabbed the gun then shot the dark shadow. After Charlie had shot the dark shadow the residents ran to only find out it was Pete Van Horn Charlie's neighbor, then leaving the residents to be suspicious of Charlie of how he was so quick to kill Pete van Horn and being judgy of all the other neighbors. This scene shows that Charlie was so quick to shoot Pete Van Horn because he was scared/feared he was the monster and that Charlie destroyed Pete Van Horn his friend/neighbor's life. Moral of the story is that a little damage can lead to fear and suspicion being destructive in its own way.
