- In Italy, during the carnival season, Montressor encounters Fortunato. He asks Fortunato to try an Amontillado Wine with him.
- Climax
- Montressor believes that Fortunato has wronged him and that he must take revenge. He doesn't tell the reader what Fortunato really did.
- Falling action
- Montressor and Fortunato go down to the catacombs. Fortunato drinks wine to help soothe his cough. Montressor pretends to be his friend by insisting that they turn back if Fortunato is sick.
- Resolution
- Montresor and Fortunato get to a niche and there is no Amontillado, Montresor chains Fortunato with shackles inside the niche. Montresor begins to build a wall and Fortunato is still shocked by the betrayal.
- The last few bricks are placed down and Fortunato screams. Montresor screams as well to scare Fortunato. He completes his revenge by trapping Fortunato in the niche.
- Montresor finishes the wall and calls out to Fortunato, only hearing the jingling of his bell in return. Montresor claims that no one discovers the bones for 50 years.
