- Daisy is driving Gatsby in his car returning from the city, and they hit Myrtle who is out in the street. This introduces a conflict between George Wilson, Myrtle’s husband, and Gatsby because Tom tells him that the car was Gatsby’s.
- Car driving
- Tom and Gatsby get into a fight over Daisy at the Wilson’s hotel. Tom makes fun of Gatsby’s pink suit and the fact that he’s not a real Oxford man. This brings up a huge decision that Daisy will end up having to make.
- No Servants No Gossip
- Gatsby meets Daisy’s daughter for the first time. He didn’t think that she was real from the stories Daisy told him. He didn’t want to believe that she would have a kid with someone that isn’t him. He didn’t like Pammy because she did not fit in with his dream for him and Daisy. This puts a different picture in Gatsby’s mind about his potential future with Daisy.
- Hot outside
- Open a window or something will ya
- Tom wants to know more about Gatsby and suspects he is up to something so he tells Gatsby to drive his blue car with Daisy and Tom will drive Gatsby's yellow car to the city with Nick and Daisy. He does this to find out what Gatsby's relationship is with Daisy.
- Gatsby fires all of his servants because he fears they will talk and gossip about Daisy and his relationship. He doesn't want the word to get out to Tom hence the reason why he replaces his servants. This shows foreshadowing that something will happen in the future that Gatsby doesn't want his servant to know.
- I am sorry, but you are all fired
- The whole chapter is the hottest day of the year. This shows the tension between the characters is building up. Things are about to get crazy and people's tempers will be even hotter.
- It's so hot, I got some drinks
