  • Oh hi! Nice to meet you! You must be the the niece of my coworker who is interested in beginning a career as a microbiologist.
  • My name is Dr. Alisha Keys. I am the one that will be showing you around and explaining what we do overall. Follow me!
  • In the Lab
  • Even though the lab is where we are most of the time, we also work in offices. We are always typing up lab reports to let others know what we have found out so far on the microorganism we are studying.
  • This is the lab. We spend most of our time here because we are always studying many different microorganisms. Things like bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and many others!
  • In the Lab
  • You must be learning about microorganisms in your biology class.
  • I can give you some examples of what microbiologist study from what you have learned in class so you can understand better.
  • 1 Internal Systems
  • You have the learned digestive system. And, that as the chyme that is created in our small intestine passes through the large intestine, the water gets removed and the chyme is combined with mucus and bacteria which is mostly E. coli and is converted into feces.
  • E.coli is bacteria that is very important for us to digest successfully. Although, specific strains of E.coli cause an E.coli infection to occur. Microbiologists study E.coli frequently due to the number of people it can infect and how easily it can cause an infection. Microbiologists are currently finding the main factor of the infections and preventing them from occurring again.
  • 1 Internal System (Was not able to use images of actual unicellular organisms)
  • For unicellular organisms, respiratory gases and nutrients enter the cell through diffusion or active transport across the cell membrane. These substances are distributed to the organelles by cytoplasmic streaming.
  • Microbiologists have studied the cellular respiration of unicellular or microorganisms which is why we know how unicellular organisms respirate.
  • Genetic Processes and Evolution
  • Antibiotic resistance is something you have learned in class. It can be an example of both genetics and evolution. Antibiotic resistance are created through a genetic mutation. When one bacteria gets the resistance natural selection will take over and make sure that in the end, every bacteria will have the resistance.
  • Microbiologists can study the natural selection of bacteria. Microbiologists also make sure that antibiotics are prescribed and used appropriately. Misuse of antibiotics can allow the bacteria to gain resistance against the antibiotic. Making sure people use antibiotics appropriately reduces the chance of having bacteria that is incapable of being controlled. Microbiologists also research new antibiotics figuring out if they are of use to humans and work well.
