- In the middle of the forest, there was a break for power lines to pass. Under it was a long stretch of field lined with trodden paths, pebbled maintenance roads, tall grasses, and massive boulders to climb and perch upon. In short, the perfect little hideaway. As my friends excitedly pushed ahead, I hung back for a breath. And lingered.
- Eventually, we reached our intended destination.
- As my friends' jovial yelps faded into the distance, so too was my presence given a chance to subside. I allowed myself a moment to feel the sentimental emotions bubbling in my chest, breathe deeply in the old, familiar surroundings.
- It was a nostalgic kind of peace -- a great and profound sense of relief, like meeting up with an old friend I'd forgotten I'd lost.
- I felt buoyant, I felt light, I felt airy. I felt free. Yet, left to quietly mull over my feelings, my surroundings evoked a sharp, poignant sense of longing and regret, slowly trickling in and suffusing with the coalesce of intense emotions churning within me. As it settled, those feelings only amplified my gratitude for the moment. The bittersweet taste of freedom, after being sorely and egregiously denied of it for far too long. I've yet to experience anything like the simple, pure appreciation of freedom and peace I had that day.
