  • "I have never done you any wrong—not wittingly and willingly, at any rate. And yet—it seemed as though a crushing debt rested upon me and weighed me down."
  • The old-fashioned phrases and language in the play, used especially by Solness, gives a sense of contemplativeness and dignity to the play as a whole and particularly to Solness. That causes the reader to focus on Solness’s opinions with greater attention and view them with more authority. In turn, that forms a tone of general dislike for the sacrifices and losses that people make to get ahead in life, as that is an opinion that Solness expresses frequently as the protagonist.
  • Language
  • "Yes, was it not? And now she wanted to know what she was to do here—whether she could begin the very next morning, and so forth."
  • "Then I did the impossible—I, no less than he."
  • "(Solness) Ah, you are right there. Misfortune will have its way—as the saying goes.(Mrs. Solness) But it’s what came of the fire—the dreadful thing that followed—! That is the thing! That, that, that!”
  • The use of a converstional sentence structure engages the reader and makes the reader invested in the opinions of the characters. Furthermore, Solness is the protagonist giving him the most opportunity to state his negative opinions of life, which leads the reader to gain a similar negative view of life.
  • SentenceStructure
  • "(Solness) [With firm assurance] The younger generation!(Dr. Herdal) Pooh! The younger generation! You are not laid on the shelf yet, I should hope."
