- In 499 BC the Ionian Greeks rebelled against the Persian empire and King Darius to gain their independence.
- Athens will belong to Persia!
- Its time to pay for your interference Athens!
- Upon hearing the news of the Ionian Greeks uprising, Athens decided to send help to the greeks in order for them to gain their freedom.
- Your 20,000 soldiers were no match for our elite soldiers
- We were outnumbered and you still lost!
- The Ionian Greeks and Athenians were severely defeated by the great Persian army. Even though the Persians won, King Darius was still very angry and wanted revenge on Athen for interferring in the conflict .
- I will avenge the defeat of my father and the Persian people no matter how long it takes!!!
- King Darius assembled 20,000 persian soldiers to invade greece. The Persian Navy fleet lands just 25 miles from Athens in Marathon to engage the Athenians in war.
- King Darius's Persian soldiers vastly outnumbered the Athenian soldiers at the battle of Marathon but the elite Athen soldiers were superior fighters. The Persians were defeated and sent back to Persia to give the news to King Darius.
- Upon hearing the news of defeat at Marathon, King Darius was furious and wanted revenge more than anything. Unfortunately for King Darius he died before he could ever get the revenge he wanted so badly. Because of these events. his son Xerxes would be set along the same path of revenge for his father and empire but that would not occur until the year 480 BCE.
