- Because of something called convection, Charlotte's room upstairs is much warmer. Convection is the movement of heat from a liquid to a gas between two spaces as a result of temperature differences. As the cold air sinks to the bottom, the hot air rises to the top of the home. Because it prevents heat from traveling from one location to another, this insulation is referred to as a "thermal insulator."
