  • In the years after World War II, The Gold coast, among other African countries, struggled greatly to regain their independence from outside forces.
  • While the Gold Coast was allowed partial self-government, Kwame Nkrumah demanded complete independence from Britain. The British eventually gave in after a series of boycotts and strikes by those who followed Nkrumah. Finally, in 1957, the Gold Coast was granted total independence and was renamed "Ghana". The struggle wasn't over yet though. In 1964, Nkrumah, Ghana's new prime minister, began overstepping his boundaries as a fair leader.
  • Ghana continued to have political issues even after they regained their freedom. This was because of their authoritarian leader. The future of his rule started to decline when Nkrumah declared himself president of Ghana for life. This has led to decades of political instability. While his rule did have some positive effects, such as the addition of hospitals and roads, it was counterintuitive to declare Ghana a one-party state.
  • Ghana has alternated several times throughout the years from being ruled by civilians or military.
