  • Harriet wrote Uncle Tom's cabin in hopes of persuading pro-slavery people, politicians and slave owners to abolish slavery. The story was based off the former slave Josiah Henson. Uncle Tom's Cabin became a very popular book and changed some peoples views. Stowe adapted her views of abolishment from her father.
  • In 1872 Harriets brother Henry was charged with having an affair with a female parishioner. This brought national attention to the Beecher family but Harriet remained on her brothers side and said he was innocent. 
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe had many properties throughout the United States and into Florida which at the time belonged to Spain. She had a house in Brunswick Maine where she wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin then in 2001 Bowdoin College bought the house to restore it, a house in Hartford Connecticut where she spent her later years, and a house in Jacksonville Florida where she wrote the book "Palmetto Leaves".
