The next day, the real Amphityron returned home and was surprised his wife wasn't excited to see him after his time away.
Alcmene explained that she had just seen him the previous day. Amphityron realized a god must have taken his shape.
When the time came for Alcmene to deliver, Zeus decreed to all the immortals that the next descendent of Perseus born wold become King of Mycenae.
Zeus's wife Hera once again was frustrated at her husband's multiple side pieces. She did everything in her power to slow Alcmene's labor.
It worked. It took Alcmene so long to deliver that a relative delivered first, thus a different descendent of Perseus was born first and was destined to become King of Mycenae.
Zeus still wanted his son to win everlasting fame. He suggested to Hera that these two children, Heracles and Eurystheus, would both grow up to be great. Eurystheus would be king and could make Heracles perform any 10 tasks. If Heracles succeeded at his tasks, then he could become immortal. Hera agreed.
