  • The Black Death started in China in the 14th century. It came from the bacteria Yersinia Pestis. It spread through fleas that infected rats. When these rats boarded a merchant ship in Asia the whole crew became infected.
  • The plague first arrived in Sicily during the fall of 1346. Peoples excitement soon turned to shock as they soon discovered that half the merchants were dead and the other half were covered in black swells and were barely alive.
  • The plague spread across Europe quickly. Historians estimate that the Black Death first arrived in Englad during the summer of 1348. By the Autunm it had reached the South-West.
  • By 1350, nearly all of England was infected with the plague. Church courtyards were full of bodies and small villages were wiped out.
  • No one at the time knew what the cause of the plague was. Most assumed it was punishment from God or the evil spirits of the dead haunting the living, whislt in reality it was just a bunch of fleas on dead or dying rats.
  • By the End of 1350 nearly 2 and a half million people ahd died. At the end of the pandemic nearly 50% of Europe was wiped out and 75 million people had passed away in Asia.
