- Disturbing or hurtful thoughts are kept hidden away from the conscious. To forget about the situation or event and repress the feelings from it.
- Repression

- Refusal to accept a harsh or sad reality. The person may deny that an event or situation occurred due to it being too much to handle.
- Denial

- Displacement
- The redirection of an emotion onto a powerless subject. To take anger out on something such as a person.
