  • Initial Population Of Giraffe
  • Mutation and Genetic Variation
  • I wish I had a long neck :(
  • Non-Random mating and overproduction
  • Giraffes reside in savannah woodlands where there are tall trees perfectly spaced for giraffes, especially long-necked giraffes, for access to higher leaves.
  • Struggle for food due to natural selection
  • Sorry guys, I have to survive too you know
  • There is a genetic variation in giraffe's neck length, which is the result of genetic mutation in the genes involved in neck length. Thus, some giraffes have long neck while others have shorter neck.
  • Survival and Reproduction of the fittest
  • Giraffes with long neck may prefer to only mate with other long-necked giraffes, while short-necked giraffes may prefer to only mate with short-necked ones.Overproduction then occurs, as more giraffes are produced than the population size that the environment can handle in terms of the availability of food.
  • Change in Gene pool over time
  • Apparently short-necked giraffes existed a long time ago
  • Giraffes with long neck are able to reach food sources high in tall trees, which are abundant in their habitat. These sources of food are too high for short-necked giraffes to reach, and as a result of overproduction and competition with other species, short-necked giraffes struggle to find sufficient food for survival.
  • Give us some leaves!
  • We're starving down here!
  • Without food, many of the short-necked giraffes die while the longer-necked giraffes live due to abundant access to sustenance. As more short-necked giraffes die, along with non-random mating of long-necked giraffes, there is a surplus of long-necked giraffes reproducing at a substantially higher rate than short-necked giraffes.
  • As more long-necked giraffes reproduce with one another, short-necked giraffes die and reproduce scarcely. The long neck genes get passed on to the following generations far more than short neck genes. Eventually, leading to the complete elimination of the short neck genes from the gene pool, only long-necked giraffes remain. This mechanism of evolution is what is called 'natural selection'.
  • Giraffes with short neck? I don't believe you
