Montresor meets Fortunato during Carnival in Italy and offers to share a really nice bottle of Amontillado wine with him. This bottle, on the other hand, is in his catacombs. It's late at night, and Fortunato appears to be sick.
Montresor, the narrator, argues that Fortunato has insulted him and is plotting his vengeance. Despite the fact that he does not reveal what Fortunato did, he makes it clear that it was terrible.
Fortunato is lured down into the dark and creepy wine vault by Montresor. As the tension mounts, Montresor repeatedly asks Fortunato if he wants to turn back because he appears ill. To relieve his cough, Fortunato continues to consume wine.
There is no Amontillado when they get at their destination, but there is a hole in the wall. Montresor imprisons Fortunato inside and begins building a brick wall.
Fortunato begs for Montresor to stop as the last few bricks are poured, but it is too late. Montresor has avenged himself.
Only the sound of Fortunato's jingling jester bells can be heard as Montresor leaves the tomb. He replaces the crypt's bones. Finally, he declares that no one has bothered them in 50 years; he has succeeded in his plot!
