  • There once was a high school girl who was in the basketball varsity team. She enjoyed playing the game until one day, she fell and hurt herself real bad. The coach sent her off to the doctors office to get her ankle checked out.
  • After the doctor had looked at her ankle, she explained how mitosis occurs in 6 stages; Interphase, Mitosis, Prophase. Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and Cytokinesis. She explained how mitosis helps with the cell growth and heals broken bones and wounds faster.
  • I have looked at your injury and seems like mitosis should help it heal fast!
  • The doctor then started to explain the phases of mitosis. She explained that Interphase is split up into 3 main parts; G1, S and G2. G1 is when the cells prepare the chromosomes to be replicated. S is when the synthesis occurs, meaning when the chromosomes are replicated and made. G2 is when they are finishing up the replication process.
  • Tell me more please!
  • The main phase your injury is in right now is Interphase.
  • The first step in Mitosis is Prophase, which is when the chromosomes become visible as paired chromatids and the nuclear envelope disappears. The doctor than explained that the second step is called the Metaphase, when the chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibers, which then join to the Centromere.***Chromosomes are thread-liked material within the nucleus containing DNA in the form of genes.
  • Spindle Fibers are the cytoskeleton structure that forms during cell division, AKA Mitosis.
  • The doctor then explained how the third step, the Anaphase, helps her heal by creating more cells. In the Anaphase, then the doubled set of chromosomes separate into two identical groups that move to opposite ends of the cell. This is helpful because the cells are in the process of producing more cells.
  • I feel almost completely healed already!
  • The nucleus is where the chromosomes and DNA is stored, and the nuclear membrane is the outside protection for the nucleolus and the nucleus.
  • 6 weeks later...
  • Right after Telophase, Cytokinesis begins. During Cytokinesis, the Cytoplasm is completely divided. A cleavage furrow forms and the cytoplasm divides, therefore creating 2 new daughter cells. After this stage, the cycle of the cells is complete, and it cycles back through continuously to continue forming new cells.
  • Now that you know all about the cell cycle and Mitosis, you are all set!
