Both Rome and Carthage are expanding and want to control Sicily. Rome has no naval experience, but when a Carthaginian ship washes up on the shore, the Romans copy it, and uses a boarding device called the corvus to make use of land tactics at sea.
The First Punic War's End
I heard that Carthage has to pay us a huge amount of money on top of us winning Sicily.
What are we doing?
Rome didn't want Carthage to establish colonies in Spain, so they sent troops to help the rebels. Carthage got mad, and sent Hannibal, their best general, to attack Rome.
The Second Punic War's End
We will be attacking Carthage to get Hannibal out of Rome
Rome wasn't satisfied with their win in the Second Punic War, and wanted to destroy Carthage for good.
The Third Punic War's End
I heard we sacked Carthage, and enslaved 500,000 people.
Using the corvus, Rome defeats Carthage, and wins Sicily, along with Carthage paying a large fine.

Hannibal's attack on Rome started off as being successful, but when Rome attacks Carthage, Hannibal returns home. After Carthage loses the battle of Zama, Rome gains Spain and another huge sum of money.
Roman soldiers burned Carthage, and enslaved 50,000 people. Carthage is now a Roman province, which means Rome now controls the entire Mediterranean region.
