That's right Guy. This UA student was scared when she started this class. She has learned so much about Qualitative Research. Now she says she knows that this is the best research method for her.
That's right Guy. This UA student was scared when she started Qual classes last year. She has learned so much about Qualitative Research and we have invited her back on our Qual News Network to share insight about Case Study which is the class that she is currently taking with Dr. Stephanie Shelton at The University of Alabama.
Tonight we bring you some good news about PhD student, Pam Bailey and her first adventure with Qualitative Research.
Pam, We are so excited to have you join us on the news set today. We want you to explain to our novice Qualitative Resaerchers what you have learned this past year and especially what you have learned in Case Study with Professor Shelton!
Case study is particularistic in that it it focuses on a particular phenomenon, situation, event, or program; it is descriptive in that it is a rich thick description or complete description of the phenomenon under study; and it is heuristic in that it should illuminate the reader's understanding of the phenomenon and bring about new meaning, extend the reader's experience or confirm what is know. Guy and Charlotte - I would absolutely love to join you again and talk about my Qualitative Resaerch Adventures and understanding the meaning that people have constructed and how they make sense of their world and experience in that world.

Thank you! I'm excited to be here talking about the research area that I love. Qualitative Research
We are so excited to have you here again, Pam! Please tell us everything that you can about CASE Study in Qual
The first important thing about Case Study that I want to share with your viewers is that not everything is a case. A case is a "bounded system". Let me explain. It draws attention to it as an object rather than a process. The boundaries have common sense. They are concrete rather than abstract. Some of these common sense bounded systems would include: an individual teacher, a single school, or perhaps an innovative program. The key is that the case is an bounded system. The researcher wants to maximize what they can learn about this one unique case, and case study will likely lead researchers to understandings and assertions.
QUAL NEWS NETWORK
With the bounded system of the case study, I as the qualitative researcher can "fence in" what I am going to study. The case then can be thought of as a phenomenon of some sort that occurs in a bounded context. Sharan Merriam described this as a circle and a heart. I think your viewers would understand this analogy in that the circle defines the edges of the case and what will not be studied and the heart is the case - the focus of the study. The bounded system that the resaearcher is focusing on to see what is noticed. It must be intrisically boaunded. It not it is not a case!
