  • On August 3rd, 1492, Christopher Columbus, with the funding of Ferdinand and Isabella, set sail west in order to discover a sea-based route to Asia.
  • After Columbus' contact with the Americas, the Columbian Exchange, the exchange of goods, ideas, people, and diseases between the Old and New Worlds, occurred.
  • On October 12th, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador, bringing the Old and New Worlds together for the first time.
  • Before European contact with the Americas, the native population were a diverse peoples with highly complex societies and cultures based on geographical location.
  • In 1519, Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortes, began his conquest in Mexico (Aztecs). By 1521, the Aztecs had fallen to the more militarily advanced Spanish.
  • After the discovery of the New World and the opportunities it presented, economic and military competition increased between European nations hoping to gain wealth and territory.
  • The Ecomienda system, implemented by the Spanish, enslaved native peoples. But since the system failed, Africans were sent to the Americas for slave labor (beginning of the Atlantic Slave Trade).
  • The native populations had no immunity to European diseases, and so they were decimated by them. The most infamous disease being smallpox.
  • Bartolome de las Casas was a Spanish clergyman who was an activist who fought for the better treatment of the native population of America. He argued that the natives were human and the Spanish weren't good Christians for torturing them.
  • "They are very clean in their persons... very apt to receive out holy Catholic faith."
  • On May 13th, 1607, the permanent settlement of Jamestown was established in Virginia. The settlement was named after James VI and I of Scotland and England.
