- Before this scene, King Duncan received the news from the Thane of Ross that the Thane of Cawdor committed acts of treason. Due to the Thane of Cawdor betraying his loyalty to the King and the country, the King no longer trusts him and wants to pronounce his death. Now that there is an open spot for someone to be the Thane of Cawdor, King Duncan decided that Macbeth would take that position when he said, "What he hath lost noble Macbeth hath won." The witches know Macbeth will gain the Thane of Cawdor title, and soon after, he will become King, so they tell Macbeth his prophecies and what the future has in store for him.
- Macbeth accumulated murderers to perform the task of killing Banquo and his son, Fleance because they are a potential threat to his power. Banquo and Fleance are out on their horses, so the murders begin to attack as they hear them approach. However, the murders could not fulfill the entire task due to the light source going out unexpectedly. When the light went out, Banquo was able to warn Fleance, which led to him figuring out how to get away. After those events occurred, the murderers went on to tell Macbeth what happened.
