NEWTON'S CANNON Newton's cannon was a thought experiment devised by Sir Isaac Newton. He imagined firing a cannonball at different speeds from velocities. Whether the cannonball stayed in orbit or not depends on the initial velocity.
The velocity is equal to the orbital velocity. The cannonball stays in orbit.
The velocity is lower than the orbital velocity. The cannonball falls to Earth.
The velocity is higher than the orbital velocity. The cannonball escapes Earth.
