After being alerted to a few riots in Harlem, the Narrator witnesses people protesting against the poor living conditions and the death of a member of the black community, Tod Clifton, by setting a fire to the town.

The Narrator decides to help the black men and women protest against the government.They decide to raid a hardware shop which they there steal all the Kerosene.

Soon later, the Narrator realizes what the kerosene was being used to burn down the apartments of the black community.

The Narrator decides to help the protesters burn out all of the apartments and evacuate the women and children.
This here's my own apartment. And ain't the bedbugs going to get a surprise. (Ellison 424)
After lighting the apartments on fire, the Narrator did not see the men who he had worked with, as he only saw a large crowd. He quickly flees the scene with a gut feeling telling him to run, because he hears someone call him by his brotherhood name.
Woman, who you say that is? (Ellison 426)
Brother ain't it wonderful. You said you would lead us , you really said it...(Ellison 426)
Ras's men find out that the Narrator was here. They begin to search for him.
