HaHaHa
The antagonist in the story is the narrator. He begins the story by telling his audience that he is not crazy, and will prove his sanity by calmly telling us how wise and cunning he was in planning and carrying out the murder of the old man. He tells the listener that his motive for murder is the old mans "vulture eye".
Climax
For one whole week the narrator is nice to the old man. The narrator watches the old man each night at midnight with a lot of dissimulation. The narrator uses a lantern to see if the old mans "vulture eye" is open. He does this by making a crevice in the lantern sufficient enough for a tiny stream of light to come out. To make sure the old man is not catching on to him the narrator asks the old man how he slept the night before.
Falling Action
On the 8th night the narrator makes a stifled laugh while stalking the old man. The laugh causes the old man to jolt up in bed and they have an hour stand off. When the narrator shines the light on the old mans eye he sees the eye is open. The narrator begins to think he hears the old mans heart beat. He is vexed by the increase sound and worries the neighbors might begin to hear it too.
Resolution
Once the narrator gains enough courage he jumps into the room yelling. He kills the man by smothering him with the mattress that the old man was sleeping on.
AAAAAAHHHH!
The narrator takes the body to the bath tub and dismembers the corpse. He hides the body parts under the floor boards in the old mans room. Once he is finished the police arrive because a neighbor had heard a shriek in the night. The narrator lets the police search the house freely. He is so calm that he invites the police to sit and rest with him. He even places the chairs for them over the floor boards where he buried the man.
I worked vehemently to dismember the corpse
The narrator begins to hear the heart beat again and thinks the old man is still alive under the floor boards. He goes insane because he thinks the police officers are mocking him and confesses to the old mans murder.
Villains, dissemble no more! I admit to the deed!-tear up the floor planks! here, here- It is the beating of his hideous heart
