- Ivan, a silverback gorilla, had his right to a free life taken away and has lived in captivity in a cage at the Big Top Mall for the past 27 years. Audiences come to see Ivan and his elephant friend, Stella, who is forced to perform three times a day, every day of the year.
- A new elephant arrives at the Big Top Mall named Ruby. After seeing Ruby's intense reactions to her mistreatment from Mack who whacks her with a claw stick and chains her to a wall, Ivan realizes that they have the right to a better life.
- The protesters for animal rights at the Big Top Mall win, the mall circus closes, and Ivan and Ruby are sent to live better lives at the zoo. Ivan watches the other gorillas and slowly becomes a real "Mighty Silverback."
