- Between 1815 and 1850 more than 800 000 immigrants migrated to Canada from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
- In 1847 Ireland suffered from a terrible famine. The potato crop had failed and many were left starving.
- We have no more food!

- In Britain, jobs were scarce due to an economic shutdown because of the end of Napoleonic Wars.

- The trip to Canada was about 2 months long. Thousands died from diseases such as typhus on the boats, the boats were often called coffin ships.
- Once they reached Canada they travelled inland by boat and wagons. They had to clear land in order to build a home and make a living
