  • The mouth has teeth, a tongue, and gums. The function of our mouth is to taste and chew food to make it smaller.
  • Amylase in the salivary glands breaks down the starch in the bread of the sandwich into simple sugars, or glucose. Our teeth cut up the sandwich into balls of smaller food called a bolus.
  • The oesophagus is a long tube that runs from the mouth to the stomach, getting food there within 6 seconds.
  • The bolus moves down the oesophagus from peristalsis. This gets the sandwich to our stomach.
  • Bile is stored in the gall bladder. This organ is tiny and pouch-like, and is positioned between the liver and stomach. Its function is to store bile.
  • Bile is produced in the liver. The liver is a triangular organ that sits closely above the stomach. Its main function is to purify blood and produce bile.
  • The stomach is like a 3D oval shape. Its function is to use its enzyme, protease, to break proteins down into smaller, soluble molecules (amino acids) that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
  • Protease in the gastric glands of the stomach breaks down protein in the cheese into amino acids. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach provides the correct acidic condition for the protease enzyme to work effectively, as well as killing any bacteria in the sandwich. Mucus lines the stomach as protection from the acid.
