While the 2nd Crusade wasn't a huge success for the Christians, it caused a new leader to rise to power on the Muslim front, Salahuddin, Saladin for short. He was a great general for the Seljuk Turks and united Muslim and Seljuks under his rule

Wanting to take back old Muslim states, he drove Byzantines out past Jerusalem. The Christians, their allies responded by starting the 3rd Crusade.

Problems started immediately. In short, Barbarossa died by drowning in a river, and his german soldiers kind of were like, "Oh no, guess this's over!" and went home.

Philip and Richard had a rocky past and old wounds were opened up in Jerusalem so Philip returned home. So, King Richard, the Lion Hearted, of England led the Crusade alone.

Richard and Saladin fought a battle with many consequences. Richard took 27 hundred Muslims into captivity for leverage in negotiations. The deal didn't go his way, so King Richard killed them all.
