THe Math to Back it Up
Reference Points
To calculate the distance traveled he first needed to find the exact circumference of his ROVER 2's wheels. He then would multiply that by the RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute) and he could determine how far he traveled.
Distance Traveled
The problem with this is that if there is a slip of the wheel in the dirt, then the total distance could be off, which is why he made sure to drive very carefully.
Blast Off
You can use reference points to check the motion of the object. Let's say that the line is about 24 kilometers and it takes him about an hour to travel. He is going 24 kilometers per hour West. This is what a vector is: it has both direction and magnitude.
Return to Base
Over 3 days and about 50 hours of driving in ROVER 2, he had traveled about 1,200 kilometers and arrived at his escape ship.
He made some last-minute repairs and was ready for launch!!!
Through jet propulsion and force he was able to fly back to his space ship and the rest of his crew.
