- Ashoka was the third ruler of the Mauryan Empire after Chandragupta passed the reign to his son and then his grandson Ashoka.
- Ashoka started expanding his empire throughout India and even further. It stretched from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Assam, Bangladesh, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. He would try to expand to Iran and Persia but would not.
- I want all of you to spread Buddha's message throughout India.
- Ashoka had decided to invade Kalinga after they refused to bow down to him. This was the the Great Slaughter.
- After the Great Slaughter 100,000 people died from the Kalinga Army and 10,000 people died for Ashoka's army.
- Ashoka was moved by the damage that he caused and started practicing Buddhism. He sent his missionaries around India to spread Buddha's message.
- Ashoka did not want to use the caste system like Hinduism. He treated all his subjects equally. All of Ashoka's writing after the Great Slaughter was about compassionate living and spreading peace and love.
