during the election of 1852, four leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination emerged. it was known that they would not get the majority of votes, Frustrated the delegates went to Franklin Pierce a known politician from New Hampshire. Pierce promised to honor the compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive slave act.
In January of 1854, Stephen Douglas introduced what became the Kansas-Nebraska act an act that would divide what remained of the Louisiana purchase into two new territories - Kansas and Nebraska
Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts criticized pro-slavery people in Kansas Representative Preston Brooks took personal offense to that and nearly beat Sen. Charles to death.
