  • "I am Tomochichi, Chief of the Yamacraw tribe. What are you doing on my land? Why are you all here? What do you want?” He said in his native language.
  • "Hello my name Cousaponokeesa also known as Mary Musgrove." She speaks in Tomochichi’s native tongue.
  • "I was born in the Creek Indian tribe, Wind Clan. I am the daughter of a Creek Native American woman and my father was an English trader. I am mixed with Yamacraw and English ancestry. This is General James Oglethorpe”. She says as she points to a tall man standing beside her.
  • "He is a British soldier and member of the British Parliament. He and his troops have settled here and would like to establish your land as a new American colony. He and his troops come in peace and want to offer fair trade for your land".
  • Mary continues in Tomochichi’s native language. "We would like to talk with you to see how we can establish this land as a new American colony".
  • "Huh? Speak now. What can you offer in exchange for my land?" Tomochichi said.
  • "British King George II granted a charter to James Oglethorpe to establish this land as a colony. James and his British settlers want to take over this land and river (Yamacraw Bluff). They want to use it for trade with the other colonists. They want to own the river and use it to fight against the Spanish forces from Florida".
  • "Mr. Oglethorpe comes in peace and wants to offer a fair trade. He wants you to join forces with him and the Brits and secure some of your best warriors. He wants your tribe to work together with his troops and the British, becoming allies to fight the Spanish. Whatever it is that your people need, the British can help you. Oglethorpe wants to bring over more soldiers and farmers to protect and cultivate this land".
  • "He wants to make this land greater than what it is and rich in resources. What can they offer? What do your people need? What will be a fair trade for this land? How can we all work together to make this land great so everyone is happy?”
  • Tomochichi looks to the sky and is silent. He appears to be thinking. He points to James and says: “What can you offer us?"
  • Mary speaks to James in English and then James beckons four of his soldiers to come forward. The men walk slowly with big trunks and rest them in front of James. James opens the trunks. They are filled with English pounds, European clothing, cloth, gun powder, tobacco, and pipes. He then speaks to Mary in English.
  • "On behalf of King George II, James Oglethorpe and the British – they would like to offer you these gifts in return for your land and provide much more. What do you say?"
