I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in the bed, crying out - "Who's there?"

The Narrator kills the old man.
The policemen arrive at the house and the narrator lets them explore around the house, including the old man's room.
The Narrator confesses to the policemen that he was the one who killed the old man.
