Charles Robert Darwin was born on 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. he was the fifth of six children so it got a bit crowded sometimes!

In 1831 Charles set off on a five year voyage around the world on the H.M.S Beagle. His study of living things around the world led him to conclude that things had changed over time; he found this out on the Galapagos Islands.

On his voyage to the Galapagos Islands, Darwin discovered a number of different species of finches which had all adapted to their unique environment. This helped him define his theory of natural selection.
