The chapter opens in the woods. The squirrels and rabbits are playing loudly.
He does not have a gun. He can not shoot us.
Matt goes fishing...
I am so grateful for the pond and creeks providing me with the food I need.
The July weather, the blueberry patches, and the growing corn makes Matt happy. It wouldn't be long before his family would be with him.
While fishing ankle deep one clear morning Matt catches four speckled trout.
While walking back from fishing he is frightened by a noise. He could see the cabin door wide open. He ran to the cabin.
Is someone there?
Ben must be back!
Flour was scattered, stools overturned, molasses and salt on the floor. The cabin was ransacked.
It couldn't be Ben. He likes food to much. Could it be the Indians? No, even the Indians wouldn't waste food.
Matt's heart sank. It must have been a bear! He forgot to secure the door.
Matt is upset with the incident. He begins to scrape the flour off the floor. It was a waste of time.
Matt starts to feel hungry. He remembers the fish. He cleans and cooks the fish. Once again thankful for the fish to eat.
Wish I had some salt.
