One sunny day in Colorado, a 14 year old girl was at soccer practice. When she got a cleat to the knee, her knee started to bleed. "Ouch, that really hurt!"
"You're in a cell."
"Where am I?!"
" Hi I am a ribosome! I build protien for cells to use!"
"Whoa! My cut really did heal up quick... my cells sure did get to work."
She must travel through a cell and get to the nucleus.
That night she went to bed dreaming about how her cut healed so quickly. She thought cells did a lot of work in just a few days. She wondered what it was like to be a cell.
ROUGH RETICULUM
I shall capture her!!
She transports into an animal cell. She encounters a goo-like substance called cytoplasm. Cytoplasm helps hold the cell's organelles in place. A ribosome helps her.
"Hello, I am Smooth Reticulum. I manufacture and transport chemical compounds to and from the nucleus." "Wow! That is cool.. is there a rough Reticulum as well?" "Yes, but do not go near her! She is evil and well...rough." "Ohh, thank you miss" "Travel well, young one, and remember my warning."
Meanwhile...
Heelloo Millie I am rough ER.
"These must be Lysosomes. They break down waste into simple compounds for other organelles to use."
Waste
Waste
"Hi protein. I am Miss Golgi Apparatus. I modify protein and fats built in the cell and prepare them for storage. Basically, I make you pretty, but if you are so messed up I transport you to the the outside of a cell." "Thank you, Miss Golgi for a change of clothes."
The rough ER
Go away. Smooth ER told me to stay away from you!!!
