Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet
Don't worry, I'll try to find a way to teach deaf childrem
Thomas Cogswell
I'm very concerned with how the deaf will communicate
The journey to figure out a sign school
This is madness!
I don't give away my methods for free
But before we can continue the story... heres Laurent!
Laurent Clerc (child)
Noooooo my high chair! ahhhhhhhh!
Thomas cogswell is a man who is very concerned with deaf childrens wellbeing, and so he and the father of a deaf girl team up to bring deaf education to the deaf children of America.
Laurent Clercs great voyage for deaf things
ship with laurent and sicard
wow! your sign language is really cool! can you teach me?
Gallaudet travels to Europe for a way to make a deaf school, unfortunately, the experts refuse to share their hidden talents, so the merchant father skulks off to a demonstration in london , where a glimmer of hope in the form of a deaf student resides...
The fateful meeting
Professor Sicard
of course.
Laurent was but a wee lad when his high chair fell into the fire and he lost his hearing (don't ask) and his teacher punched him in the face because he didn't know how to talk, Laurent didn't like getting punched very much and neither did his tounge, nor his tastes, so he commited himself to learning all things sign language, the french one I mean.
and lo, a school was born
Hooray for deaf school!
Being tired of napoleon, Laurents best-friend professor Sicard made a trip over to the British isles in hopes of finding a less toxic environment to raise deaf culture, that was when on July 10...
british isles this way
here at last, Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet coming face to face here at the london demonstration, Gallaudet was enraptured by Sicard and co.'s incredible signing. After the demonstration was over, Gallaudet acompanied the frenchmen back to France, where he was taught all sorts of things. When it was time to come home for Gallaudet, Laurent offered to come with, against the wishes of professor Sicard
Having returned to America, they rented out some rooms for their school, say it with me now! The American Asylum for Deaf and Dumb Persons was oficially open on December 15th, 1817. Many more historical events follow suit, but for now, let's rejoice for deaf school.
