  • In 1899, the Boxers were recruited by the local governor of Shandong as militia to fight German expansion in the province. German missionaries and merchants were settling in the area, so the governor called on the Boxers in an attempt to oppose the foreign influence in Shandong. The Western forces protest against the Boxers, causing the governor to be replaced. Although theQing government tried to take action against the Boxers, they simply moved to theprovince of Zhili.
  • In June of 1900, the Boxer violence was only increasing. The Boxers were attacking Western homes, businesses, Christians, and foreigners inBeijing and Tianjin.The Dowager Empress Ci Xi did not let the Imperial army control or stop the Boxers. The Imperial army later joined the Boxers. Several Western powers sent troops to China so they could stop the Boxers. Since Western forces had more developed weapons, they ended up crushing the Boxers and the Imperial troops.
  • In September 1901, the Boxer Protocol was imposed by Western forces. Even though the Qing tried to reduce the penalty by the West, China still had to pay$330 million in reparations. The peace treaty ended up expanding the Western power and influence in China. The Boxer Rebellion was a violent movement, and though there aren't exact numbers, it presumed to have resulted in around 100,000 deaths.
